Duke Delivers, Martinez Dominates As Pomeroys Earn Doubleheader Split At Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball battled to a split Friday afternoon in River States Conference play, falling 3-2 in extra innings in game one before responding with a 1-0 shutout victory over the University of Rio Grande in game two at Rio Softball Park.

Game 1 – Rio Grande 3, SMWC 2 (8 innings)
The Pomeroys (13-25) struck first in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Jenna Baker doubled to left center to drive in Kyar McVey.

Rio Grande (28-15) answered with two runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead, but SMWC quickly responded in the fourth. Isabelle Waldron scored on a Rio Grande fielding error, tying the game at 2-2.

The contest remained deadlocked into extra innings before Rio Grande walked it off in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single from Kendyl Moss.

SMWC totaled eight hits in the opener, with Baker, Carley Werremeyer and Caeden Bennett each recording two-hit performances. Jasmine Kinzer (7-11) took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over 7.1 innings.

Game 2 – SMWC 1, Rio Grande 0
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods responded behind a dominant pitching performance from Lanna Martinez and timely hitting from Bailey Duke.

The game's only run came in the fourth inning when Duke delivered an RBI single to left center, scoring Waldron for a 1-0 lead.

Martinez (6-10) was outstanding in the circle, tossing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just three hits, walked none and struck out three while facing only 24 batters.

The Pomeroys again tallied eight hits offensively, led by multi-hit efforts from Kyar McVey and Hannah Boardman. Duke added the lone RBI, while Maddie Smith, Caeden Bennett and Abbi Henderson each contributed hits.
