SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball split its River States Conference Senior Day doubleheader with WVU Tech on Saturday at SMWC Softball Field, falling 6-5 in game one before bouncing back for an 8-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Pomeroys (11-23) struck early with three runs across the first two innings.
Jenna Baker and
Bailey Duke each delivered RBI hits in the first, while
Kyar McVey added an RBI in the second to make it 3-0.
WVU Tech (8-22) responded with a two-run fourth before taking the lead with a three-run fifth inning. The Golden Bears added another run in the sixth and held off a late SMWC rally in the seventh.
Maddie Smith and Baker each drove in runs in the final frame to pull within one, but the comeback fell short.
Baker led the Pomeroys with two hits and two RBIs, while
Hannah Boardman added a pair of hits.
Jasmine Kinzer took the loss in the circle.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods responded in game two with a dominant performance, using a late offensive surge and strong pitching to secure the split.
After three scoreless innings, the Pomeroys broke through in the fourth as Duke delivered an RBI single and
Kaylyn Wheeler followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
SMWC erupted for six runs in the fifth to put the game away. Boardman highlighted the inning with a two-run home run, while Wheeler added an RBI single.
Emma Hunter capped the scoring with a three-run double.
Caeden Bennett led the offense with a 3-for-3 performance and two runs scored, while Hunter finished with two hits and three RBIs.
In the circle,
Lanna Martinez was dominant, tossing a complete-game shutout in the five-inning run-rule victory. She allowed just four hits while striking out five to earn the win.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods returns to action Tuesday, April 14, hosting Indiana University Southeast in a River States Conference doubleheader at SMWC Softball Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m., with game two to follow at 4 p.m. as part of Herd Day. Live stats will be available at SMWCAthletics.com.
