VIERA, Fla. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball dropped a pair of games Monday at the
Space Coast Spring Games, falling
5–4 to Lourdes University in the opener before
College of Coastal Georgia pulled away late for an
8–2 extra-inning victory in the nightcap.
The Pomeroys move to
0–4 on the season.
Game 1 — Lourdes 5, SMWC 4
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College rallied late but Lourdes secured the win with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Lourdes took a
1–0 lead in the first inning before the Pomeroys answered in the fourth.
Hannah Boardman delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that scored
Kyar McVey, tying the game at
1–1.
The Gray Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a
4–1 advantage. SMWC cut into the lead in the sixth when
McVey singled home
Kaylyn Wheeler.
The Pomeroys completed their comeback attempt in the seventh inning as McVey delivered a
two-run single that scored
Isabelle Waldron and
Emma Hunter, tying the contest at
4–4.
Lourdes answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from
Olivia Hickman to secure the
5–4 walk-off victory.
McVey paced the Pomeroys offensively, finishing
3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Wheeler added a triple and
Caeden Bennett recorded a double.
In the circle,
Jasmine Kinzer threw
6.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with
seven strikeouts.
Game 2 — Coastal Georgia 8, SMWC 2 (8 innings)
The Pomeroys opened the scoring in the nightcap when
Kylie Cooksey crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the first inning, tying the game after Coastal Georgia had taken an early lead on a sacrifice fly.
The game remained tied
1–1 through seven innings as both teams traded defensive stops.
In the eighth inning, Coastal Georgia broke the game open with
seven runs, highlighted by RBI hits from
Brooke Perdue,
Raeghan Harvey,
Julianna Batts, and
Kaitlyn Carolino.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College added a run in the bottom of the inning when
Kyar McVey scored on a wild pitch following a double from
Abbi Henderson, but the rally ended there as Coastal Georgia secured the
8–2 win.
SMWC finished with
five hits, including a double by Henderson.
Hannah Boardman,
Emma Hunter,
Libby Jaynes, and Cooksey also recorded hits for the Pomeroys.
Lanna Martinez pitched all eight innings for SMWC, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits while striking out seven.
