VIERA, Fla. – The
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team earned its first two victories of the season Tuesday at the
Space Coast Spring Games, defeating
Clarke (Iowa) 3–0 before rallying past the
University of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) 5–3.
Game 1 – SMWC 3, Clarke (Iowa) 0
The Pomeroys opened the day behind a dominant performance in the circle from
Jasmine Kinzer, who tossed a
complete-game two-hit shutout.
Kinzer worked all seven innings, allowing just
two hits while striking out two and walking four. She kept Clarke off the scoreboard throughout the contest while throwing
99 pitches.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when
Abbi Henderson delivered an RBI single to score
Hannah Boardman, giving SMWC a
1–0 lead.
The Pomeroys added insurance runs in the seventh.
Kinzer helped her own cause with an RBI single to plate
Maci Woerner, before
Libby Jaynes grounded out to bring home
Kyar McVey and extend the lead to
3–0.
SMWC finished with
seven hits in the victory.
McVey led the offense with two hits, while
Bailey Duke and
Kaylyn Wheeler each recorded doubles.
Game 2 – SMWC 5, University of Fort Lauderdale 3
In the second game of the day, the Pomeroys used a
five-run fifth inning to erase a three-run deficit and secure the comeback win.
Fort Lauderdale grabbed a
2–0 lead in the third inning and added another run in the fifth to make it
3–0.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning.
Caeden Bennett delivered a
two-RBI single to score
Kyar McVey and
Jazlynn Ward, cutting the deficit to one.
Audrey Schau followed with a
two-run single to score
Bennett and
Bailey Duke, giving SMWC its first lead of the game.
Emma Hunter then added an RBI single to bring home
Schau and cap the five-run inning.
McVey led the offense with three hits, while Bennett and Schau each drove in
two runs.
In the circle,
Lanna Martinez earned the win after pitching
four innings of relief, allowing one run and striking out three.
Maci Woerner started the game and worked the first three innings.
With the pair of wins,
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods improved to 2–4 on the season.
The
Pomeroys return to action Wednesday, March 11, continuing play at the
Space Coast Spring Games. SMWC will face
Aquinas College (Mich.) at 2:30 p.m. (ET) before taking on the
University of Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m. (ET) at the
Space Coast Complex in Viera, Florida.
