Brescia Edges SMWC Men’s Volleyball in Five-Set River States Conference Battle

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team pushed Brescia (Ky.) to the limit Saturday morning, but the Pomeroys ultimately fell in a tightly contested five-set River States Conference match inside the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.

Brescia escaped with a 3–2 victory over SMWC, winning by set scores of 21–25, 25–22, 22–25, 27–25, 17–15.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (16-4, 2-3 RSC) jumped out strong, claiming the opening set behind an efficient offensive effort that saw the Pomeroys hit .406. SMWC regained the lead in the third set with another steady attacking performance, setting up a dramatic finish as the match went the distance.

The fourth set proved pivotal as Brescia (7-9, 2-4 RSC) narrowly held off the Pomeroys 27–25 to force a deciding fifth frame. In the final set, both teams traded points throughout before the Bearcats closed the match with a late push to secure the win.

Despite the loss, SMWC finished with a slight edge in hitting percentage, posting a .295 attack percentage with 65 kills, while Brescia hit .286 with 65 kills of its own.

Yammiel Martinez led the Pomeroys with 15 kills, while Noah Boyett added 14 kills and contributed a team-high five blocks. Francesco Tedeschi chipped in 12 kills, helping fuel a balanced offensive attack.

Setter Ethan Ricketts orchestrated the SMWC offense with 48 assists, while Jeremy Lapeze led the defensive effort with 12 digs. Tyler Duranceau added nine digs and three service aces, tying for the team lead in aces.

SMWC also received strong play at the net from Joseph Szadorski, who recorded five blocks, and Martinez, who added four blocks to go with his team-best kill total.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will look to bounce back quickly as the Pomeroys return to action Tuesday with a road trip to Franklin College.
