SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team earned a four-set River States Conference victory over Cumberland University (Tenn.) on Saturday morning inside the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.
SMWC (21-4, 3-3 RSC) defeated Cumberland (8-8, 4-3 RSC) by set scores of
25-18, 25-22, 18-25, and 25-22 in front of 125 fans.
The Pomeroys opened the match strong, hitting .241 in the first set with 12 kills while limiting Cumberland to a .029 hitting percentage to secure the early advantage. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods continued its momentum in the second set, posting its best offensive performance of the match with
15 kills and a .400 hitting percentage to take a 2-0 lead.
Cumberland responded in the third set, hitting .385 with 13 kills to extend the match with a 25-18 win.
SMWC regrouped in the fourth set, using strong play at the net and timely offense to close out the match with a 25-22 victory. The Pomeroys finished with
48 kills and a .209 hitting percentage, narrowly edging Cumberland's 47 kills.
Bentley Meyer led the Pomeroys with
12 kills and nine digs, while
Yammiel Martinez added
10 kills and three blocks.
Tyler Duranceau contributed
eight kills and eight digs to help power the SMWC attack.
Setter
Ethan Ricketts guided the offense with
34 assists, while
Trevin Matsuba tallied
10 digs and an ace.
Noah Boyett anchored the defense at the net with a
match-high five blocks, while
Christian Green and
Martinez each added three blocks.
Cumberland was led by
Joao Infante, who recorded a match-high
21 kills, while
Zendai Richards and
Nage Hendrickson each added nine kills.
