GRAYSON, Ky. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College jumped out to an early four-run lead in game one, but Kentucky Christian rallied late to edge the Pomeroys 6–5 on Friday afternoon at Grayson Sports Park in the River States Conference opener.
SMWC (2-8, 0-2 RSC) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, plating four runs in the top of the first inning.
Audrey Schau delivered an RBI single to right to score
Kyar McVey, while
Hannah Boardman followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home
Bailey Duke.
The Pomeroys continued to apply pressure as a passed ball allowed Schau to score, and
Kaylyn Wheeler capped the inning with an RBI single to right field that scored
Emma Hunter to make it 4–0.
Kentucky Christian (9-7) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning before SMWC added another in the second. Duke lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score McVey, extending the lead to 5–2.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods held the advantage into the later innings behind
Lanna Martinez, who tossed six innings in the circle while striking out four.
Kentucky Christian chipped away in the fifth inning on a two-run single from
Kylie Mathes before completing the comeback in the seventh. An SMWC error allowed the tying run to score, and
Adrianne Chmielewski followed with a walk-off RBI single to center field to secure the 6–5 victory.
McVey led the Pomeroys offensively, finishing
2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases, while Duke recorded a hit and two RBIs. Schau, Hunter, and Wheeler each added a hit as SMWC totaled six hits in the contest.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Kentucky Christian pulled away early and defeated the Pomeroys
16–0 in five innings. SMWC recorded four hits in the game from
Kyar McVey, Raegan Manhart, Libby Jaynes, and Hannah Boardman.
