BECKLEY, W.Va. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball picked up a River States Conference doubleheader sweep at WVU Tech on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Park, taking the opener 6–4 before shutting out the Golden Bears 6–0 in game two.
With the pair of wins, SMWC improves to 4–8 overall and 2–2 in River States Conference play.
Game One – SMWC 6, WVU Tech 4
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College jumped on WVU Tech early, scoring four runs in the first inning to build a lead it would not relinquish.
Bailey Duke opened the scoring with an RBI double to left field to bring home
Kyar McVey.
Libby Jaynes followed with an RBI single before
Hannah Boardman delivered the big swing of the inning, blasting a two-run home run to center field to give the Pomeroys a 4–0 advantage.
SMWC added another run in the second inning when Duke doubled again to drive in a run, and
Emma Hunter later stole home in the third inning to extend the lead to 6–2.
WVU Tech chipped away with runs in the second, third and fifth innings but could get no closer as the Pomeroys held on for the win.
Lanna Martinez earned the complete-game victory in the circle, allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks over seven innings.
The Pomeroys collected 14 hits in the opener.
Boardman's two-run home run highlighted the early offensive surge for SMWC.
Game Two – SMWC 6, WVU Tech 0
SMWC completed the sweep with a 6–0 shutout victory in the second game behind strong pitching and another productive offensive performance.
The Pomeroys struck first in the opening inning when
Audrey Schau singled to left field to score McVey.
SMWC added three more runs in the second inning.
Abbi Henderson reached on a bunt that resulted in an error and drove in two runs, before McVey followed with a sacrifice bunt to plate another run for a 4–0 lead.
The Pomeroys extended the advantage in the fifth when
Jasmine Kinzer doubled to center field to drive in
Hannah Boardman, and added their final run in the sixth after
Libby Jaynes doubled to right field and
Bailey Duke scored on a WVU Tech error.
Kinzer earned the win in the circle, tossing six scoreless innings with five strikeouts while allowing four hits.
Annie Harmon closed the game with a scoreless seventh inning to secure the shutout.
SMWC recorded 12 hits in the second game.
The Pomeroys finished the day with 26 hits across the doubleheader.
SMWC returns to action Wednesday, March 18, traveling to Indianapolis for a doubleheader against No. 6 Marian University (Ind.). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET with game two set for 5 p.m. ET.
