VIERA, Fla. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College competed in a pair of games Wednesday at the Space Coast Spring Games, falling 4–3 to Aquinas College before dropping a 5–0 decision to the University of Northwestern Ohio. The Pomeroys move to
2-6 overall on the season.
Game 1 — Aquinas 4, SMWC 3
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods took an early lead but could not hold off a late rally as Aquinas scored three runs in the sixth inning to secure a 4–3 win.
The Pomeroys struck first in the second inning when
Abbi Henderson reached on an error that allowed
Caeden Bennett to score the game's first run. SMWC added another in the third after
Hannah Boardman reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error, bringing home
Bailey Duke to make it 2–0.
Aquinas cut the deficit in the third inning on an RBI double from
Alea Fisher, trimming the lead to 2–1.
The Saints then broke through in the sixth inning, plating three runs on RBI singles from
Karigann Cuthbert,
McKenna Hinkle, and
Daniela Anzaldua to take a 4–2 lead.
SMWC responded in the seventh when
Kyar McVey singled and later advanced as
Audrey Schau scored on a throwing error, pulling the Pomeroys within one run, but Aquinas held on for the win.
The Pomeroys collected eight hits in the contest.
Libby Jaynes led the offense with two hits, while
Bailey Duke,
Emma Hunter,
Raegan Manhart,
Abbi Henderson,
Kyar McVey, and
Audrey Schau each added one. Manhart and Schau recorded doubles.
Maci Woerner worked 5.1 innings in the circle, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out three.
Jasmine Kinzer (1-3) took the loss in relief. Aquinas pitcher
Kenzie Green earned the complete-game victory.
Game 2 — Northwestern Ohio 5, SMWC 0
In the nightcap, the University of Northwestern Ohio used a balanced offensive effort and strong pitching to defeat SMWC 5–0.
The Racers opened the scoring in the third inning when
Dominique Baker lifted a sacrifice fly that resulted in an unearned run following a defensive miscue.
Northwestern Ohio added two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI fielder's choice by
Cecilia Campbell and an RBI single from
Susan Vokes. The Racers extended their lead to 5–0 in the sixth inning behind another RBI single from Baker.
SMWC recorded six hits in the game.
Kyar McVey and
Caeden Bennett each collected two hits, while
Audrey Schau and
Hannah Boardman added one apiece.
Lanna Martinez pitched a complete game for the Pomeroys, allowing five runs (three earned) on 13 hits with five strikeouts. Vokes earned the win for Northwestern Ohio after tossing a seven-inning shutout.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods now shifts its focus to
River States Conference play this weekend.
The Pomeroys will open conference action on the road with a doubleheader at
Kentucky Christian University on
Friday, March 13, with first pitch scheduled for
2 p.m. (ET) in
Grayson, Kentucky, followed by game two at
