RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball faced a tough road test Saturday afternoon, falling 128–47 to No. 8 nationally ranked
Rio Grande RedStorm at Newt Oliver Arena.
Rio Grande (20-1, 9-0 RSC) came out firing, building a 44–9 advantage after the opening quarter and never looking back. The RedStorm shot 62.7 percent from the field for the game, including 17-of-32 from three-point range, while forcing 28 turnovers that resulted in 53 points.
SMWC was led by
Talyssa Moody, who poured in a team-high 17 points, knocking down five three-pointers.
Samara Douglas added 10 points, while
Jaala Campbell chipped in six points off the bench in limited minutes.
The Pomeroys showed fight in the third quarter, scoring 16 points and stringing together their most productive stretch of the afternoon.
Haley Polston and
Elayni Stone anchored the interior, helping SMWC collect 27 rebounds against a deep and balanced Rio Grande lineup.
Rio Grande placed seven players in double figures, led by Kate Ball's 21 points off the bench and Allie Ellyson's 20 points and five assists. The RedStorm bench totaled 55 points as the hosts steadily extended the margin in the second half.
SMWC returns home on Tuesday, February 3, hosting IU Southeast in River States Conference action. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. inside the Jeanne Knoerle Sports and Recreation Center.
