AUSTIN, Texas – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team kept its hot start rolling with a straight-set sweep of Paul Quinn College on Saturday morning at Branch Gym. The Pomeroys improved to 14-1 on the season with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-14 victory.
Karla Melendez powered the SMWC offense with a match-high 17 kills while hitting .452, and she added four aces and three blocks to round out a dominant two-way performance.
Masa Pesic tallied nine kills and
Grace Geisler chipped in eight as the Pomeroys finished with 45 kills as a team on a .309 hitting percentage.
Setter
Aden Britt (who was reunited last night with her dog ironically named Quinn) directed the attack with 26 assists while also serving up four aces.
Leishmarie Virella anchored the defense with 20 digs, and Melendez added eight digs to help limit the Tigers to a .149 hitting mark.
The Pomeroys gained control in the opening two sets with late runs before closing out the match with a convincing third set, holding Paul Quinn to just eight kills against eight errors.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods held edges in every major statistical category, including a 61-39 advantage in total points, 11-4 in aces, and 5-4 in blocks.
The Pomeroys return to the court this afternoon in Austin, squaring off against Howard Payne University at 2 p.m. (CT) to close out their Texas road swing.
