AUSTIN, Texas – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team capped off a flawless Texas road trip with a 3-1 victory over Howard Payne University on Saturday morning at Branch Gym. The Pomeroys (15-1) earned set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13 to finish the weekend 4-0 in Austin.
After splitting the first two sets, SMWC took control in the third frame with a .391 hitting percentage while holding the Yellow Jackets to a negative mark. The Pomeroys then sealed the match in convincing fashion, swinging at a .500 clip in the fourth set to close out the win.
Karla Melendez led the attack with 12 kills and four aces, while
Lisanel Rodriguez provided a serving spark with six aces. Defensively,
Leishmarie Virella collected 15 digs and
Sofia Soto added six blocks at the net. Setter
Aden Britt finished with 19 assists and eight digs.
As a team, SMWC hit .373 and out-aced Howard Payne 18-5 while recording a 10-3 advantage in blocks.
With the win, the Pomeroys improved to 15-1 overall and extended their winning streak to four. SMWC opens River States Conference play on Tuesday evening at Oakland City University.
