AUSTIN, Texas – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College volleyball team opened play at the Huston-Tillotson Invitational in commanding fashion Friday morning, sweeping Xavier University of Louisiana, 3-0, at Branch Gym.
The Pomeroys (12-1) pulled out a hard-fought second set and held off the Gold Nuggets (7-3) by scores of 25-19, 29-27, 25-21.

SMWC finished with a .274 hitting percentage, tallying 46 kills to Xavier's 42. After taking the opening frame with steady defense, the Pomeroys clawed out a back-and-forth second set before closing out the sweep behind clutch serving and net play in the third.
Pomeroy Leaders
- Grace Geisler led the attack with 14 kills and added a match-high six service aces.
- Karla Melendez provided 13 kills and chipped in four aces.
- Masa Pešic added 10 kills and two blocks.
- Aden Britt served five aces, recorded 13 assists, and notched 11 digs.
- Ryan Canter paced the offense with 16 assists.
- Leishmarie Virella anchored the back row with 12 digs.
SMWC also produced 16 service aces, while the defense recorded 44 digs on the morning.
Xavier Leaders
The Gold Nuggets were led by Kennedy Campbell and Taylor Parker with 10 kills apiece. Charity Metcalf dished out 19 assists, while Michaela Clayton collected 14 digs and four aces.
