EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team battled to a 1–1 tie against Calumet College of St. Joseph on Friday evening.
The Pomeroys (0-3-1) struck first when senior defender
Roxie Foerg converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute, giving SMWC the early advantage. The Crimson Wave (0-0-2) responded less than 10 minutes later as Regan Hornyak netted the equalizer in the 27th minute to level the match.
Both teams' defenses held firm the rest of the way. SMWC goalkeeper
Kieran Groover collected four saves, while Calumet's Kaleigh Blatti matched her with four stops of her own.
The Pomeroys outshot Calumet 10–9, with five shots on goal apiece. SMWC also earned three corner kicks, compared to seven for the Crimson Wave.
Foerg led the Pomeroys with two shots, including the lone goal, while
Raelee Everhart added three attempts. Freshman
Mackenzie Best and
Priscilla Cardichon each recorded a shot on goal.
The draw marks the second straight result away from home for SMWC, which continues its road swing on Sunday, September 7, when the Pomeroys travel to Harris-Stowe (Mo.) for a 1 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
