EAST CHICAGO, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team found its offensive rhythm Friday night, erupting for an 8–2 victory over Calumet College of St. Joseph.
The Pomeroys (1-4) wasted no time setting the tone, scoring five times in the opening 13 minutes.
Andre Gomes opened the scoring in the 5th minute, assisted by
Ivan Gelado Chavala. Moments later,
Ethan Johnson and
Jaime Gayol Pertierra added tallies, with Gayol Pertierra converting a penalty kick and finishing a second goal just two minutes later.
Gayol Pertierra completed his hat trick in the 13th minute, giving SMWC a commanding 5–0 advantage at halftime.
Calumet (0-4) got on the board early in the second half through Nigel Osei Asare in the 48th minute, but SMWC quickly answered.
Mitchell Stewart scored in the 52nd minute before Gelado Chavala netted back-to-back goals in the 70th and 75th minutes, finishing with two goals and one assist on the night.
The Crimson Wave added a late strike from Alan Trejo, but the Pomeroys' balanced attack proved too much. In total, SMWC recorded 26 shots, with 21 on goal.
Gayol Pertierra led the way with three goals, while Gelado Chavala contributed two goals and an assist. Gomes, Johnson, and Stewart each added a goal.
Marc Valderrama also tallied an assist.
SMWC goalkeepers combined for three saves on the night.
The Pomeroys now look to carry their momentum into another road test at Harris-Stowe (Mo.) on Sunday, September 7, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. (CT).
