SMWC Late Rally Falls Short Against Saint Francis (Ind.)

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer dropped a 4-2 decision to the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on Saturday afternoon at the SMWC Soccer Complex.

The Cougars (2-4-1) struck early with goals in the 15th and 39th minutes to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime. Ryusei Matsushita opened the scoring for Saint Francis before Abdul Manaf Annor added a second tally off a feed from Leo Tuelpanov.

The Pomeroys (2-6-0) found their footing after intermission. Andoni Ybanez put SMWC on the board in the 55th minute, finishing a setup from Afonso Lino. Just 15 minutes later, Jamachi Obiukwu buried a chance assisted by Ethan Johnson to trim the deficit to 3-2.

Saint Francis answered with a penalty kick goal from Nicolás Balbi in the 77th minute to put the match out of reach. The Cougars outshot SMWC 13-9 overall and 6-6 on frame.

Goalkeeper Harry Jackson made two saves for the Pomeroys, while Johnson and Lino each recorded assists. SMWC's attack was paced by Ybanez and Obiukwu, who combined for both goals on six total shots.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will make the short trip across town on Tuesday, Sept. 16, to take on Rose-Hulman at 7 p.m. (ET).
