TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Friday night at the Rose-Hulman Intramural Field.
The Engineers (1-0-0) opened their season with a strong performance, outshooting the Pomeroys (0-2-0) by a 36-0 margin and placing 17 shots on target. SMWC goalkeeper
Eerika Erjansalo made
12 saves in a full 90-minute effort.
Rose-Hulman's scoring opened in the 37th minute as
Emma Johns finished off a pass from
Lauren Marquardt. Just over six minutes later,
Gaby Hansen extended the lead to 2-0 on a setup from
Taylor Beede.
The Engineers added three more goals in the second half.
Iliana Hernandez netted a pair of goals in the 53rd and 59th minutes, both assisted by
Ally Smith.
Meagan Hall capped the scoring in the 68th minute with a goal assisted by
Katie Choi.
Despite the final result, SMWC showed defensive resilience for stretches of the match, and Erjansalo's efforts in goal were a bright spot for the Pomeroys.
