SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Cleary University (Mich.) on Monday afternoon at the SMWC Soccer Complex.
The Pomeroys (0-2-0) controlled much of the possession and finished with a 17-9 edge in total shots, including a 9-8 margin in shots on goal. Despite the pressure, Cleary goalkeeper Enrico Bibbo turned away nine attempts in nearly 60 minutes of action, and the Cougars' back line kept SMWC off the scoreboard.
Cleary (2-0-0) broke through in the 72nd minute when Jack Heald capitalized on a scoring chance for the only goal of the contest. Heald recorded one shot on goal, while Atario Brown put two dangerous attempts on frame for the visitors.
SMWC was led offensively by
Andoni Ybanez, who recorded four shots, three of them on goal.
Marwan Jamoussi added four shots, while
Jacobo Galvez and
Afonso Lino contributed two apiece. Freshmen
Jaime Gayol Pertierra and
Vinicius Steger Pires each registered a shot on goal off the bench as the Pomeroys mounted late chances.
Goalkeeper
Harry Jackson kept the match tight for the Pomeroys with six saves on the day.
The physical match featured 30 fouls and eight yellow cards.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will continue its early-season schedule on the road Wednesday, August 27, traveling to Trinity Christian College (Ill.) for a 4 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
