SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team came up just short in its 2025 season opener on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-2 to visiting Hannibal-LaGrange University at the SMWC Soccer Complex.
The Pomeroys (0-1-0) struck first in the 15th minute when freshman forward
Andoni Ybanez netted his first collegiate goal off an assist from
Ivan Gelado Chavala. Hannibal-LaGrange (2-0-0) answered with two goals before halftime, as
Clemente Cabrera scored in the 30th minute and
Pedro F. Melchert added another just before the break to give the Trojans a 2-1 lead.
HLGU extended its lead early in the second half when
Adrian Garthaus converted in the 53rd minute with an assist from Melchert. The Pomeroys responded less than a minute later as
Jacobo Galvez tallied his first goal of the season, pulling SMWC back within one. Despite generating pressure late, the Pomeroys were unable to find the equalizer.
The contest featured a physical edge, with both sides combining for six yellow cards. Attendance for the home opener was 126.
SMWC will remain at home to face Cleary University (Mich.) on
Monday, Aug. 25 at Noon (ET) at the SMWC Soccer Complex.
