HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team opened its 2025 season Tuesday night with a 3-1 loss on the road at Huntington University.
The Pomeroys (0-1) dropped the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-19 before battling back to take the third set 25-23. Huntington (1-0) closed out the match in the fourth with another 25-19 decision.
Junior outside hitter
Masa Pesic paced the Pomeroys' offense with
12 kills and 13.5 points, while
Karla Melendez added
11 kills and 12 digs for a double-double effort. Setter
Aden Britt kept the offense moving with a team-high
15 assists, and
Leishmarie Virella anchored the defense with
24 digs in the back row.
Despite the setback, SMWC showed strong stretches of play in its opener, highlighted by the third set rally that kept the Pomeroys in contention.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will look to regroup quickly as it heads to Milwaukee, Wis., for the
Blue Angel Bash on August 22-23. The Pomeroys begin tournament play against Michigan-Dearborn on Friday, August 22, at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
