NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College split a River States Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon against IU-Southeast, taking Game 1 with a 3-0 shutout before falling in the nightcap by the score of 3-2.
The Pomeroys (14-14, 9-9 RSC) rode a dominant performance from
Emily Fitzwater in the opener, as the right-hander tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout to lift SMWC to a 3-0 victory. Fitzwater struck out two and did not issue a walk in the win, facing just two batters over the minimum in an efficient 86-pitch outing.
All three SMWC runs came in the first inning.
Hannah Boardman delivered a two-run single up the middle to plate
Abbi Henderson and
Kyar McVey, then
Jaidyn Fuller stole home moments later after Boardman swiped second, pushing the lead to 3-0. That would be all the support Fitzwater needed.
The Pomeroys managed just four hits in the game, with Boardman, McVey, Fuller and Fitzwater each recording one. SMWC played solid defense behind their ace, committing just one error while stranding five Grenadiers on base.
IU Southeast's Emma Davis (10-3) was tagged with the loss despite a solid effort, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out three over seven innings.
In the second game, IU Southeast (20-10) capitalized on a three-run second inning and held off a late SMWC push to secure the split. The Pomeroys were limited to just three hits in the loss.
The Grenadiers struck in the second when Shelby Gaither ripped a three-run triple to right field, scoring Alyssa Winzeler, Kaylee Leister, and Sydney Guy. Two of the runs were unearned following a SMWC defensive miscue.
SMWC responded in the third with two runs.
Abbi Henderson and
Jasmine Kinzer each singled, and
Jaidyn Fuller followed with an RBI base hit to left, trimming the deficit to 3-2. However, the Pomeroys managed just one baserunner over the final four innings against IU-Southeast starter Haylie Nunemaker (5-2), who earned the complete-game win with three strikeouts and no walks.
Lanna Martinez suffered the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits over two innings.
Alex Overman kept the game within reach with four scoreless innings of relief, striking out one and giving up five hits.
Fuller, Henderson, and Kinzer accounted for SMWC's hits in the nightcap.
SMWC returns to action on Friday, April 11, for a home doubleheader against Oakland City (Ind.). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET at the SMWC Softball Complex.
