GEORGETOWN, Ky. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College pushed nationally ranked No. 13 Georgetown (Ky.) to the limit Saturday afternoon but ultimately fell 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 28-30, 25-22) in a hard-fought road contest at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.
SMWC (23-8, 6-7) showcased resilience, especially in a marathon third set win, but couldn't overcome Georgetown's potent attack, which tallied 68 kills to the Pomeroys' 48.
Joseph Szadorski powered SMWC with a team-high 14 kills and added four blocks and six digs in a well-rounded effort.
Bentley Meyer turned in another strong performance with 12 kills, five digs, and a service ace.
Christian Green chipped in nine kills, while setter
Kristofers Klavins orchestrated the offense with 40 assists and tallied three service aces and three blocks of his own.
On the defensive end, libero
Trevin Matsuba led SMWC with 12 digs, helping anchor the back row against a Georgetown squad led by NAIA standout Michal Bak, who recorded 24 kills and nine digs.
After dropping the first two sets, SMWC responded with grit, taking the third in dramatic fashion, 30-28, behind timely kills from Szadorski and strong net presence from
Yammiel Martinez, who finished with a team-high six blocks.
SMWC returns to action Tuesday, April 8, traveling to IU-East. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET.
