RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team suffered two losses to Rio Grande (Ohio) in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 26. The Pomeroys fell 6-0 in game one, followed by a 6-2 defeat in game two.
With the losses, the Pomeroys dropped to 18-24 on the season. In game one, Rio Grande's explosive five-run fifth inning propelled them to a 6-0 victory. In game two, a combination of early runs and strong pitching by Rio Grande's Beers (8-1) handed the Pomeroys a 6-2 setback.
Game 1 Recap: In the first game, Rio Grande's K. Sedgwick delivered a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and the RedStorm's offense added additional insurance runs to seal the 6-0 win. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods was held to just two hits, with both coming from
Kyar McVey and
Mikayla Mills.
Emily Fitzwater (5-9) took the loss despite a solid pitching performance in which she allowed five earned runs over 4.1 innings.
Game 2 Recap: In the second game, Rio Grande took an early 5-1 lead in the second inning, thanks to a series of timely hits. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods fought back with a run in the fourth, as
Hannah Boardman capitalized on an error to score, cutting the lead to 5-2. However, Rio Grande's offense responded with another run in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach. Despite six hits from the Pomeroys, including three from freshman
Kyar McVey, the team could not mount a sustained rally.
Madison Moultray (4-4) took the loss for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings.
The Pomeroys will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, April 27, with a doubleheader against Shawnee State (Ohio), starting at 11:00 a.m. (ET).
