PORTMOUTH, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team wrapped up its regular season Sunday, falling in both games of a doubleheader against Shawnee State at Doc Singleton Park.
In the opener, SMWC (18-26, 13-19 River States Conference) dropped a 6-1 decision. The Pomeroys struck first with an RBI groundout by
Libby Jaynes in the third inning, but Shawnee State answered quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom half and adding three more in the fifth to pull away.
Emily Fitzwater took the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits across five innings.
Mikayla Mills,
Jaidyn Fuller, Fitzwater and
Alyse Rollings each collected a hit for the Pomeroys.
In game two, the Pomeroys jumped ahead early but ultimately fell 6-4. SMWC scored twice in the first inning, with
Emily Singleton scoring on a passed ball and
Alyse Rollings delivering an RBI single.
Lanna Martinez blasted a two-run homer in the third to pull SMWC within a run, but Shawnee State capitalized on an error in the fifth to tack on an insurance run. Martinez started in the circle and pitched two innings, with
Alex Overman providing four strong innings of relief.
The Pomeroys now turn their attention to the River States Conference Tournament, which opens Thursday, May 1, in South Charleston, West Virginia. SMWC has earned the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will take on No. 4 Shawnee State at 3 pm (ET).
