MIDWAY, Ky. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team came up short in both games of a River States Conference doubleheader at Midway (Ky.) on Wednesday, falling 4-3 in eight innings in Game 1 and 12-4 in Game 2. The Pomeroys now sit at 18-22 overall and 13-15 in conference play.
Game 1: Midway 4, SMWC 3 (8 Innings)
Jaidyn Fuller continued her standout freshman season with a 2-for-3 effort that included two doubles and two RBIs. Fuller delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the top of the eighth, but the Eagles answered with a two-run, walk-off single in the bottom half.
Abbi Henderson scored twice and notched two hits, while
Mikayla Mills added a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Emily Fitzwater took the loss despite a strong outing, striking out nine in 7.1 innings and allowing only two earned runs.
Game 2: Midway 12, SMWC 4 (5 Innings)
In the nightcap, SMWC built a 4-3 lead by the fourth inning before Midway erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early via run rule.
Lanna Martinez drove in two runs on a double and a single, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate, while also starting in the circle.
Samantha Dodds added two hits and an RBI, and
Caeden Bennett chipped in an RBI single. Fuller scored a run and added another double to her tally.
Martinez (4-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six earned runs over 4.2 innings. The Midway offense totaled 12 hits, capitalizing on a late defensive miscue and timely hitting to pull away.
