BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team came up short in a pair of non-conference matchups on Tuesday (April 22), falling 10-2 and 3-2 in a road doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.). With the two losses, the Pomeroys move to 18-20 overall.
In Game 1, the Pomeroys clawed back from an early 6-0 deficit with a two-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from
Samantha Dodds and
Hailey Boardman. Despite the rally, Olivet Nazarene used late scoring bursts to pull away. Dodds finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while
Jaidyn Fuller,
Abbi Henderson, and Boardman each collected hits.
Madison Moultray (3-1) took the loss in the circle, and
Alex Overman provided 4.2 innings of steady relief.
In Game 2, the Pomeroys outhit the Tigers 7-3 but couldn't overcome a three-run first inning by ONU.
Emily Fitzwater (5-4) was sharp in the circle, tossing six innings and allowing no earned runs while striking out five. SMWC responded in the fourth with back-to-back RBI singles from
Libby Jaynes and
Mikayla Mills, trimming the lead to one. Despite multiple late baserunners, including hits from
Kyar McVey (2-for-4) and Fitzwater, the Pomeroys couldn't push across the tying run.
Mikayla Mills finished Game 2 with a 2-for-3 line and an RBI, while Fuller added another hit to her productive day at the plate.
SMWC now turns its attention back to River States Conference play, traveling to Midway University (Ky.) for a crucial doubleheader on Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 3 p.m. ET.
