BECKLEY, W.V. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball team earned a road doubleheader split on Friday afternoon, bouncing back from a 9-1 loss in the opener with a crisp 3-0 shutout in game two behind Alex Overman's gem in the circle.
The Pomeroys now stand at
18-18 overall and 13-13 in River States Conference play, while WVU Tech drops to 5-33 on the season.
Game 1: WVU Tech 9, SMWC 1 (5 innings)
WVU Tech capitalized on SMWC defensive miscues in a six-run second inning to seize control early and never looked back. The Golden Bears recorded nine hits and benefitted from three Pomeroy errors.
SMWC managed just one run, which came in the third inning when
Caeden Bennett scored on a misplayed fly ball.
Jaidyn Fuller led the offense with a pair of hits, including a double.
Hannah Boardman also added two hits in the loss.
Lanna Martinez took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs in 1.1 innings.
Madison Moultray and
Alex Overman pitched in relief.
Game 2: SMWC 3, WVU Tech 0
In the nightcap,
Alex Overman delivered one of her best performances of the year, tossing a
seven-inning, two-hit shutout with
nine strikeouts and no walks. Overman was in complete command from the start, needing just 84 pitches to finish the job.
She faced the minimum through four innings and stranded a runner in scoring position only once. WVU Tech managed just two singles as Rollings silenced the Golden Bears with a mix of precision and poise.
Offensively,
Hannah Boardman drove in the first two runs with RBI singles in the first and third innings, finishing 2-for-2.
Jaidyn Fuller added a key insurance run in the seventh with a bunt single that scored
Jasmine Kinzer, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot.
SMWC pounded out 11 hits in the win, with
Mikayla Mills also notching a 2-for-2 day. The Pomeroys were clean defensively, turning in one error-free inning after another to back Rollings' effort.
