SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC) softball team wrapped up the home portion of its 2025 regular season in dominant fashion Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader against IU-Columbus (Ind.) with final scores of 5-4 and 9-1 at the SMWC Softball Field. The Pomeroys (17-17, 12-12 River States Conference) showcased timely hitting and strong pitching to even their overall record and improve their conference standing.
Game 1 Recap
In a tightly contested opener, SMWC edged IU-Columbus, 5-4. After IU-Columbus jumped on the board in the first inning on a double by M. Shelton that scored T. York, SMWC answered back in the second inning.
Madison Moultray powered a double that drove in
Jaleigh Crawford to tie the game.
In the fourth inning, Moultray delivered a sacrifice fly to push Crawford home and take a 2-1 lead. The momentum swung decisively in the fifth inning when
Hannah Boardman singled to score a run, followed by an error that allowed
Jaidyn Fuller to reach and another unearned run to score. Crawford then singled, driving in an additional run and extending SMWC's lead to 5-1.
IU-Columbus mounted a late rally in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on a wild pitch and key singles, but SMWC's pitching—anchored by Moultray's five-inning effort (3 hits, 1 run, 2 strikeouts) before handing over to
Emily Fitzwater—stifled further damage, sealing the 5-4 win.
Game 2 Recap
SMWC's offensive onslaught continued in Game 2 with a 9-1 victory over IU-Columbus (12-24, 9-15 RSC). The Pomeroys opened the scoring in the first inning when
Libby Jaynes singled through left, driving in
Emily Singleton. The third inning was explosive as SMWC amassed five runs:
Jaidyn Fuller ignited the inning with a two-run homer to left field that put SMWC on top, followed by a sequence of hits—a single by
Alex Overman scoring Jaynes, a double by
Caeden Bennett driving in Crawford, and another single by Singleton that brought Overman home—to stretch the lead to six.
In the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly by
Jaleigh Crawford scored
Raegan Manhart (the run coming unearned) to make it 7-0. IU-Columbus managed their only run in the sixth inning on a homer by O. Bright, but SMWC answered immediately; a single by
Jaicee Jackson (with K. Dinkel advancing and Jaynes scoring) followed by a hit from
Marah Wyrick (bringing in Dinkel) pushed the tally to 9-1.
On the mound,
Alex Overman (4.0 IP, 4 strikeouts, 1 hit) held IU-Columbus to just one run, earning the win over J. Cash.

SMWC will return to action Friday, April 18, when the Pomeroys travel for a River States Conference doubleheader at West Virginia Tech. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET in Beckley, W.Va.
