SMWC Men's Volleyball Falls To Nationally-Ranked Georgetown

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind.  — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team fell to No. 8 Georgetown (Ky.) in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at home, losing 25-14, 25-19, 25-19. 

The Pomeroys dropped to 14-5 overall and 1-4 in River States Conference play, while the Tigers improved to 11-2 and remained perfect in league play at 6-0.

For the Pomeroys, senior Bentley Meyer led the team with eight kills and 10 digs. Junior Joseph Szadorski added 6 kills and 2 aces, while Kristofers Klavins contributed with 21 assists, 3 blocks, and 5 digs.

Georgetown kept the Pomeroys at arms length during the match with efficient hitting, finishing with a .389 attack percentage compared to SMWC's .146. The Tigers recorded 49 kills, led by Jose Acuna Yepes with 14, while SMWC struggled to generate offense with just 27 kills.

Georgetown was particularly effective in the opening set, quickly building a commanding 13-2 lead. SMWC could not recover, as the visitors ran away with the first set, 25-14. The second and third sets saw some fight from the Pomeroys, but Georgetown's consistent offense and solid defense kept the hosts at bay, with the Tigers finishing the match in three sets.

The Tigers were led by Acuna Yepes' 14 kills and 8 digs, while Kristjan Unt added 11 kills, 13 digs, and 4 service aces. Finn Heinemann tallied 39 assists and 10 digs, leading Georgetown's offense throughout the match.

SMWC is back in action on Monday, March 10 when they travel to Maranatha Baptist for a doubleheader beginning at 5 pm (CT).
