WATERTOWN, Wis. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team completed a doubleheader sweep on the road against Maranatha Baptist on Monday evening (March 10).
The Pomeroys swept both matches to improve to 16-5 on the season while Maranatha fell to 0-14. SMWC returns to action on Friday, March 14 when they travel to Rio Grande for a 7 pm (ET) matchup inside River States Conference play.
In the day's first match,
Noah Boyett posted a school record 14 service aces as the team was credited with 22 total. Boyett's 14 service aces are a new NAIA single game record.
GAME ONE:
SMWC cruised to a 3-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist in the first match of the double dip. The Pomeroys dominated all three sets, winning by scores of 25-7, 25-12, and 25-10, to secure the road victory.
SMWC was led by a stellar performance from senior outside hitter
Emmanuel Rubio, who finished with a team-high seven kills, contributing to the Pomeroys' efficient attack. Rubio's offensive presence was highlighted by a .875 attack percentage.
Also standing out for SMWC was
Andrej Lindner, who registered six kills, and
Noah Boyett, who added another six. Boyett also recorded an eye-popping 14 service aces in the victory -- the best for a single-match in NAIA history.
In addition to the offensive effort, the Pomeroys' defense was relentless, led by nine each from Gerrado Sanchez and
Caden Harretos.
The match was never in doubt, as SMWC's attacking efficiency outshone Maranatha Baptist's offense, which was limited to just a .016 attack percentage. The Pomeroys posted a .419 hitting percentage compared to the Sabercats' .016. Boyett posted a pair of blocks in the match.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods finished the match with 75 total points, powered by 31 kills, 27 assists, and 21 service aces.
GAME TWO:
SMWC earned a dominant 3-0 sweep over Maranatha Baptist in Monday's nightcap, securing the victory with set scores of 25-16, 25-10, and 25-13.
The Pomeroys set the tone early, with a solid offensive performance led by
Andrej Lindner who recorded 11 kills, and
Caden Harretos, who added six kills.
In the opening set, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods pulled away after a late run, winning 25-16. The second set was even more lopsided, as Saint Mary-of-the-Woods cruised to a 25-10 win behind a .346 hitting percentage.
The third set saw more of the same, with the Pomeroys finishing off the sweep with a 25-13 scoreline. The final blow came on a Maranatha service error as the Pomeroys sealed the set.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' success was also reflected in their team stats. The Pomeroys recorded 75 points on 39 kills and a .346 attack percentage.
