SMWC Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Harris-Stowe (Mo.)

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind.  — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College softball opened the home portion of their schedule with a pair of victories over Harris-Stowe on Tuesday afternoon (March 4) at the SMWC Softball Field. They took the opener by a 12-0 score and came back in the nightcap with an 11-3 victory.

The Pomeroys improved to 4-2 on the young season and have now won a total of four consecutive contests. SMWC begins River States Conference play on Friday, March 7 when they host Midway (Ky.) for a doubleheader at 3 pm (ET) at the SMWC Softball Field.

GAME ONE:
SMWC struck first in the opening frame, taking a 2-0 lead. After an error in the outfield allowed Kyar McVey to score, Libby Jaynes reached first on a second error to bring in Emily Fitzwater. The Pomeroys then extended their advantage in the second inning, scoring two more runs, including a sacrifice fly by McVey that allowed Jaidyn Fuller to cross the plate.

The floodgates opened in the fourth as the Pomeroys added 8 runs to their tally. Samantha Dodds highlighted the inning with a two-run double, followed by a wild pitch and a stolen base home by Kylie Cooksey. Caeden Bennett capped off the inning with a three-run double to bring in three unearned runs, including Jaynes, Aaliyah Overman, and Libby Jaynes.

Emily Fitzwater (1-0) earned the win for SMWC, tossing two shutout innings and allowing just two strikeouts with no walks. Alex Overman and Marah Wyrick each added two scoreless innings of relief, with Wyrick fanning three in her lone inning of work.

Harris-Stowe's struggles continued as they were held to just two hits, with Jada Washington and Libby McGilberr each collecting one. The Hornets' offense was also stifled by the Pomeroys' defense, as Harris-Stowe left three runners stranded on base.

Jada Crenshaw (0-1) took the loss for Harris-Stowe, allowing 12 runs (6 earned) on 7 hits over four innings. She walked five batters and struck out two.

GAME TWO:
Harris-Stowe took an early lead in the first inning when M. Thomas doubled to drive in J. Crenshaw and N. Anderson, giving the Hornets a 1-0 advantage. SMWC answered back in the second inning with a run of their own, as M. Helmkamp scored on an error by the Harris-Stowe third baseman, tying the game at 1-1.

The Hornets grabbed another lead in the third inning, scoring two runs on a M. Thomas double and a B. Huff RBI single, putting Harris-Stowe up 3-1. However, the Pomeroys responded with a powerful offensive display in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs. Alyse Rollings delivered a two-run double, and L. Martinez and A. Henderson each added RBIs to give the Pomeroys a 6-3 lead.

SMWC continued to extend their lead in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Boardman doubled in a run in the fourth, and M. Helmkamp followed with another RBI single, putting the Pomeroys ahead 7-3. The offense kept rolling in the fifth and sixth innings, adding four more runs, including a three-run performance from A. Henderson, who finished with a game-high three RBIs.

Lanna Martinez (1-0) earned the win for the Pomeroys, allowing three runs on five hits over three innings while striking out four. Madison Moultray and Marah Wyrick each provided excellent relief, combining for four scoreless innings to preserve the lead.

N. Anderson (0-2) took the loss for Harris-Stowe, surrendering 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits over 5.1 innings. Anderson walked five batters and struck out none in the outing.
The Pomeroys' offense was led by Rollings, who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs, and Abbi Henderson, who finished with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. St. Mary-of-the-Woods tallied 16 hits in total, while Harris-Stowe struggled to find consistency, collecting just five hits.
