GAME ONE:
SMWC bounced back from an early deficit to defeat Midway (Ky.) 7-6 in the first game of their conference-opening doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
Midway struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. R. Berger doubled in M. Hill for the game's first run, and then A. Wampler's sacrifice fly scored Berger to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The visitors added two more in the second inning, including a solo homer from P. Baum and an RBI single from K. Thompson, pushing the lead to 4-0.
But the Pomeroys responded in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the deficit to one.
Mikayla Mills singled in a run, followed by sacrifice flies from
Alyse Rollings and
Alex Overman, bringing the score to 4-3.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods continued to build momentum in the fourth inning. An error by Midway's second baseman allowed the tying run to score, and then
Hannah Boardman's two-RBI single gave the Pomeroys their first lead of the game, 6-4.
SMWC tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, when
Jaleigh Crawford grounded out to drive in Rollings and make it 7-4.
Midway didn't go down without a fight, scoring twice in the top of the seventh. K. Thompson's sacrifice fly brought in Berger, and S. Bittner singled to score Snodgrass, cutting the lead to 7-6. However,
Marah Wyrick closed out the game for the Pomeroys, earning the save with a scoreless final inning.
Alex Overman (1-0) earned the win for SMWC, pitching six solid innings, allowing just two earned runs on three hits while striking out five. Wyrick picked up the save after a 1-2-3 inning of relief.
Midway's starting pitcher, A. Grimley (0-1), was handed the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits over three innings. S. Bittner came on in relief, allowing four more runs on six hits.
The Pomeroys finished the game with 13 hits, led by
Mikayla Mills, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Midway, on the other hand, was limited to just six hits, with R. Berger contributing a 1-for-3 performance, scoring twice.
GAME TWO:
SMWC took a lead in a tied game in the bottom of the fourth inning with
Kyar McVey's RBI single to take a 3-2 advantage.
The Pomeroys then took control in the fifth inning, when
Hannah Boardman launched a three-run homer to center field, scoring
Alyse Rollings and
Kylie Cooksey. The blast put SMWC ahead 6-3. Once SMWC recorded three outs to end the frame the game was called due to darkness and the Pomeroys earned the 6-3 victory.
Lanna Martinez (1-0) sealed the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Martinez, who entered the game in the fourth, allowed three runs on three hits while striking out two.
Midway's starter, A. Hoskins (0-1), took the loss after giving up six runs (all earned) on seven hits over four innings. A. Duncan provided a strong relief outing for the Eagles, throwing a scoreless inning and allowing just one hit.
The Pomeroys were led offensively by Boardman, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. McVey also contributed with a 1-for-2 performance, driving in a run.
For Midway, Apling's two-run homer was the highlight, and S. Bittner added an RBI single in the fifth, but it was not enough to overcome the Pomeroys' late surge.
