MIDWAY, Ky. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team earned a dominant 3-0 victory over Midway University in River States Conference (RSC) action on Saturday, March 15. With the win, the Pomeroys improve to 17-6 on the season and 2-5 in RSC play.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods came out strong, winning all three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-16. The Pomeroys were led by
Bentley Meyer, who recorded a team-high nine kills, and
Ethan Martins, who dished out 19 assists in the match. The Pomeroys' offense fired on all cylinders, hitting .316 as a team, compared to just .159 for Midway.
Charlie Harr and
Noah Boyett both had strong performances at the net, each recording three blocks. Meyer and Boyett also added strong defensive efforts with four and five digs, respectively. Junior libero
Trevin Matsuba was a standout on defense, finishing with a team-high seven digs.
In addition to Meyer's nine kills, Boyett and Harr each contributed five kills, while Meyer also added two service aces. The Pomeroys also had a strong serving performance, with
Joseph Szadorski recording three aces.
The Pomeroys came out of the gates strong, with
Joseph Szadorski playing a key role, recording multiple kills and a service ace early on. The set began with a block error by SMWC's
Bentley Meyer, giving Midway a brief 1-0 lead, but the Pomeroys quickly regained control.
Szadorski continued his offensive attack, delivering a kill from
Kristofers Klavins to put SMWC up 3-1. A series of service errors from both teams helped keep the score close, but Saint Mary-of-the-Woods found their rhythm with strong hitting from players like Meyer and
Trevin Matsuba.
Midway was unable to keep up with the Pomeroys' powerful offense, despite kills from Jose Conde and Jai'Den Chinnis. SMWC's defense, led by Meyer and
Charlie Harr, shut down many of the Eagles' attempts. The Pomeroys gained momentum as the set went on, with Klavins contributing several key assists, including a set-up for Matsuba's kill to make it 18-9.
With the score at 22-14, a service ace from
Andrej Lindner put the Pomeroys within reach of winning the set. After a few back-and-forth rallies, a final service ace from Szadorski sealed the 25-18 victory for Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
The second set began with both teams trading points early. Midway's Jaden Alston and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods'
Tyler Duranceau each contributed key kills to keep the score close. However, Duranceau quickly made his mark, serving two aces in quick succession to give the Pomeroys an early 3-1 lead.
Midway battled back, with Alston and Jose Conde each contributing kills, but Saint Mary-of-the-Woods continued to dominate offensively.
Bentley Meyer and Duranceau were integral to the Pomeroys' success, with Meyer adding a service ace and a kill to extend the lead to 11-6. The Pomeroys also benefitted from multiple errors by the Eagles, including attack errors from Jai'Den Chinnis and service mistakes from the Eagles.
As the set progressed, the Pomeroys built a solid lead, with solid performances from
Noah Boyett and
Ethan Martins. Boyett's timely kills, including one from Martins' assist, kept Midway at bay. The Pomeroys maintained a steady rhythm, despite occasional kills from Midway's Jose Conde and Steven Tippenhauer.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods reached set point with a strong service error by the Eagles, and after a couple of back-and-forth points, a final attack error by Midway's Lincoln Anderson sealed the set at 25-19 in favor of the Pomeroys.
After splitting the first two points, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods quickly took control of the set, going on a 6-1 run.
Tyler Duranceau, who had a standout performance throughout the match, added a service ace and several kills, helping the Pomeroys build a 7-3 lead. Midway struggled with errors early in the set, including attack and service errors from both Jai'Den Chinnis and Luke Wallace, which allowed the Pomeroys to keep their momentum.
Noah Boyett and
Andrej Lindner helped maintain the Pomeroys' offensive pressure. Boyett contributed two kills and a service ace, while Lindner added a key kill from an assist by
Ethan Martins. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' defense also made an impact with blocks from
Bentley Meyer and
Charlie Harr to stifle Midway's attack.
Midway attempted to rally with kills from Steven Tippenhauer and Jordan Daily, but the Pomeroys' well-rounded offensive attack proved too much. With a balanced team effort, including a service ace and kills from Martins and Lindner, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods extended their lead to 24-16.
Trevin Matsuba's powerful serve closed out the set with two aces, and the Pomeroys clinched the 25-16 victory, completing the sweep.
Midway (1-12, 0-8 RSC) struggled to keep up, with Jose Conde leading the Eagles with seven kills and one ace. However, the team was unable to mount a consistent offensive attack, as they hit just .159 for the match.
Next up, the Pomeroys will travel to Greenville, Ill., for a non-conference matchup against Greenville University on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. (CT).
