BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's basketball team dropped a 68–45 decision to Governors State University on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Tournament.
The Pomeroys (0–2) opened strong, building a 19–13 lead after the first quarter behind early scoring from
Abigail Parker, who posted a game-high
24 points on 11-of-18 shooting. However, Governors State's defensive pressure and balanced attack took over in the middle quarters, limiting SMWC to just
14 points combined in the second and third periods.
Governors State (1–1) outscored the Pomeroys 23–7 in the third frame to pull away. The Jaguars shot
46.4% from the field and
36.4% from three-point range, while SMWC finished at
37.0% overall and just
1-for-13 from long distance.
Parker's 24 points led all scorers, and
Talyssa Moody added
10 points off the bench.
Samara Douglas contributed
six rebounds and three steals, while
Elayni Stone and
Jonnaya Harris each chipped in defensively with two steals apiece.
Governors State was paced by
Davina Smith with 19 points and
Cencere McDaniel with 17. The Jaguars also held a
37–28 rebounding edge and forced
22 SMWC turnovers, converting those into 25 points.
The Pomeroys will regroup before returning to action on
Thursday, November 13, when they travel to Georgetown (Ky.) at
5:30 p.m. (ET).
