Cruz Control: Gonzalez Guides Poms to Sweep
SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College stayed hot on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping Midway University 25-14, 25-17, 25-19 inside the Knoerle Center. The Pomeroys improved to 22-2 overall and 6-1 in River States Conference play.
SMWC hit .337 as a team, piling up 41 kills compared to Midway's 22.
Three Pomeroys finished with eight kills apiece.
Karla Melendez (.533),
Evelyn Morales (.462), and
Lisanel Rodriguez (.400) led a balanced attack. Melendez also chipped in two block assists and two assists, while Morales added three block assists.
Setter
Ariana Cruz-Gonzalez directed the offense with 23 assists, three service aces, and four digs.
Ryan Canter added 11 assists, while
Selena Sosa anchored the back row with a match-high 16 digs.
Daniella Zvonar added two aces and six digs. Off the bench,
Holly Linville tallied seven kills on a .357 clip, and
Masa Pesic posted four kills in limited action.
Midway (1-14, 0-7 RSC) was led by Alyssa Medeiros with five kills and two blocks, while Nyla Gaines added four kills and Kayedon Mattingly hit .429 with three kills.
SMWC controlled the match early, hitting .417 in the opening set and holding Midway to a negative percentage. The Eagles were limited to just .053 hitting on the day.
The Pomeroys now turn their focus to the road, traveling to Kentucky Christian for a 7 p.m. (ET) contest on Friday, Oct. 10.
