Pomeroys Surge Late To Defeat IU-East

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer erupted with three goals in the final 15 minutes to secure a 3-1 River States Conference victory over Indiana University East on Monday afternoon. The contest, originally suspended on Oct. 18, was resumed and completed on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

After 75 minutes without a goal, Jaime Gayol Pertierra finally broke through in the 76th minute with the opener off a pass from Marc Valderrama. The Red Wolves (3-12-1, 1-7-0 RSC) quickly responded in the 83rd minute when Jaiden Earls found the equalizer to make it 1-1.

The Pomeroys (6-9-1, 4-2-1 RSC) quickly regained control. Jacob Quintana delivered the game-winner in the 86th minute, assisted by Valderrama and Santiago Abraham. Just three minutes later, Gayol Pertierra struck again to seal the 3-1 victory with his second goal of the day.

SMWC outshot IU East 17-12, including a 13-5 edge on goal. Harry Jackson made four saves in net for the Pomeroys, while IU East goalkeeper Elijah Williamson kept the Red Wolves in contention with 10 stops.

The win keeps SMWC in the top half of the conference standings as the regular season nears its close.

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will return to action in River States Conference play on Thursday, Oct. 30, when the Pomeroys travel to Brescia (Ky.) for a 6:30 p.m. (CT) match.
