COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team delivered an efficient offensive performance to earn a 4-2 victory at IU-Columbus on Thursday night at BCSC Soccer Complex. The win improves the Pomeroys to 5-9 overall and 3-2 in River States Conference play.
IU-Columbus opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Christian Cardoso finished off a pass from Alejandro Alvarez. The Pomeroys responded quickly, leveling the match in the 32nd minute on a goal by
Ivan Gelado Chavala, assisted by
Marc Valderrama.
SMWC grabbed the lead just three minutes later when
Franco Mauri converted a setup from
Jacobo Galvez to make it 2-1 heading into halftime.
The Pomeroys extended their advantage early in the second half with a pair of goals in the 55th minute.
Jaime Gayol Pertierra scored off an assist from
Mitchell Stewart, and Gelado Chavala struck again less than a minute later on a feed from
Jamachi Obiukwu, stretching the margin to 4-1.
IU-Columbus cut into the lead with an 81st-minute goal from Dylan Krueckeberg, assisted by Trent Schenk, but goalkeeper
Harry Jackson anchored the SMWC defense with six saves to preserve the win.
Gelado Chavala led the Pomeroys with two goals on three shots, while Mauri and Gayol Pertierra also found the scoresheet. SMWC finished with 16 total shots, including 11 on frame, compared to IU-Columbus' 15 shots (nine on goal).
The Pomeroys now return to the SMWC Soccer Complex for
Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, hosting Shawnee State at 1 p.m. (ET).
