SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer turned in a strong defensive effort Thursday afternoon but came up just short in a 1-0 River States Conference loss to the University of Rio Grande at the SMWC Soccer Complex.
The match remained scoreless through the first 65 minutes before the RedStorm (3-2-5, 1-0-1 RSC) broke through in the 67th minute.
Stephanie Beaulieu netted the decisive tally, finishing with a match-high six shots and three on target.
The Pomeroys (0-9-1, 0-3-0 RSC) battled back with six total shots, five of them on goal.
Mackenzie Herring and
Tarni Nicol each placed attempts on frame, while freshman
Raelee Everhart came off the bench to provide two shots, including one on target.
Goalkeeper
Eerika Erjansalo anchored the SMWC defense with
eight saves across 90 minutes. Rio Grande outshot the Pomeroys 16-6 and held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks, but the Pomeroys kept the contest within one possession until the final whistle.
Rio Grande split goalkeeping duties, with
Alba Vilades Marin earning the win after playing 90 minutes including 5 saves.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods will look to regroup on the road when it continues River States Conference play Saturday, Oct. 4, with a 1 p.m. (ET) kickoff at Kentucky Christian.
