RIO GRANDE, Ohio – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team picked up another key River States Conference road victory Friday evening, defeating the University of Rio Grande 3-1 inside Newt Oliver Arena. The Pomeroys improved to 25-2 overall and 9-1 in conference play, while the RedStorm fell to 20-9 and 8-3.
Set scores were 23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-22.
After dropping the opening set, the Pomeroys rebounded with efficient hitting and timely defense. SMWC hit .387 in the second set and never trailed again in the match, finishing with a .188 attack percentage compared to Rio Grande's .159.
Junior outside hitter
Masa Pesic led the attack with 16 kills and 21 points, while sophomore
Karla Melendez added 14 kills and 12 digs.
Lisanel Rodriguez chipped in 12 kills, and
Evelyn Morales and
Sofia Soto combined for nine kills and 15 block assists at the net.
Setter
Aden Britt ran the offense with 43 assists while also tallying 17 digs and four kills. Libero
Leishmarie Virella anchored the back row with 15 digs.
Daniella Zvonar contributed a team-high four service aces.
As a team, the Pomeroys recorded 55 kills, 49 assists, 73 digs, 14 blocks, and seven service aces.
Rio Grande was led by
Taylor Bartrum and
Kelli Stewart, who each notched 20 kills. Setter
Elle McLoughlin dished out 48 assists, while libero
Jenna Harrison collected a match-high 30 digs.
SMWC will continue its RSC road swing on Saturday, Oct. 18, at West Virginia Tech. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
