SMWC Men's Soccer Holds On For Thrilling Victory Over Harris Stowe

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's soccer broke out of the gates early in the second half with a pair of goals and then survived a late Harris-Stowe surge en route to hard fought 2-1 victory over the visiting Hornets on a hot and sunny Saturday (Aug. 24) afternoon the SMWC Soccer Complex.

The Pomeroys earned their first victory of the season to improve to 1-2 on the season while Harris-Stowe fell to 0-1-1.

Ivan Gelado broke a halftime stalemate on the scoreboard with a goal in the 46th minute for the 1-0 advantage. Carlington Henry had the assist on the play.

In the match's 68th minute, the Pomeroys got a score from Mitchell Jay Stewart which extended the lead out to 2-0. Marc Valderrama provided the assist on the goal.

Harris-Stowe would not get on the board until the 80th minute on a score from K. Sigler which drew the Hornets within 2-1 with just over nine minutes remaining in the contest. They pressed hard on offense but the standout play of defender Jayden Moore and the rest of the Pomeroy defense was enough to hold the Hornets off for the 2-1 victory.

In goal, Harry Jackson faced four shots on goal -- allowing just the one late goal and provided three second half saves in the win. Moore stopped a Harris-Stowe scoring chance early in the contest with a huge back save to keep the contest tied at nil.

John Victor Costa had a pair of shots on goal in the contest but it was Harris-Stowe would held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams took 10 shots in the contest. The Hornets owned an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks throughout the contest.

The Pomeroys return to action at the SMWC Soccer Complex on Tuesday at 3 p.m. (ET) against visiting Trinity Christian (Ill.).
