Pomeroy Soccer Falls To St. Francis (Ill.) in home opener

SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. -- The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team dropped its home opening match to visiting University of St. Francis (Ill.) on Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 21) by the score of 5-2 at the SMWC Soccer Complex.

The Pomeroys fell to 0-2 on the young season while the Fighting Saints improved to 1-0.

John Victor Costa helped trim into a 4-0 St. Francis advantage in 72nd minute when he took a rebound off a saved shot and found the back of the net while suffering a blow to the ear after a brief celebration. The Pomeroys would trim the lead down to just 4-2 a few moments later when Vinicius Steger Pires scored from 15 feet out straight on to keep the Pomeroys in the contest.

Costa's goal was assisted by Emile Jamois while Pires scored his off the assist from Jaime Gayol,

SMWC continued to have the advantage in the second half until the waning minutes when USF scored late for the 5-2 victory.

Harry Jackson was in goal for SMWC and recorded six saves.

The Pomeroys back in action on Saturday, August 24 when they host Harris-Stowe at 1 p.m. (ET) at the SMWC Soccer Complex.
