Saint Mary-of-the-Woods fell in three sets at Midway on Tuesday by scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.
Freshman
Mark Zmojdzin paced SMWC with 10 kills, coming on 21 attacks for a .333 hitting percentage.
Anioma Njokanma added five kills on 10 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.
Christian Green had three kills and three blocks.
Ethan Martins had a team-high 17 assists.
The Pomeroys pulled within 16-13 in the opening set on an attack by Zmojdzin and closer yet at 17-15 on a kill by
Jacob Wisniewski.
Victor Bazzo, who had 24 kills for the Eagles, put one away for a 23-19 Midway lead. The Eagles went on to take the set. The second set played out similarly, with the Pomeroys pulling within 17-15 but unable to get any closer.
The Pomeroys continued to battle in the third set. Zmojdzin, Green and Njokanma combined for a block of a Bazzo attack to get within 19-17. The Eagles ran off three straight points on their way to the 25-19 set victory to clinch the match.
