Pomeroys fall in four to Rio Grande

The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team came up just short of picking up a home win Wednesday against Rio Grande.
The Pomeroys' Julian Green drilled a match-high 15 kills, but the Pomeroys dropped the match 3-1 (24-26, 25-17, 21-25, 24-26).
"We played great tonight for 90 percent of the match. Unfortunately, our age and inexperience showed in the criticial moments blowing multiple leads in multiple sets. We will build off the 90 percent of what we did great tonight and learn from our mistakes. There's no quit in this group," coach Ian Harris said.
A back-and-forth opening set went to the Red Storm, but the Pomeroys led 24-22 after a kill by Julian Green. Rio Grande rebounded with four straight points, with Caden Donaldson delvering a kill and an ace for the Red Storm.
The Pomeroys dominated most of the second set, using an 8-2 run to take an 18-11 lead. Yammiel Martinez, who had seven kills, had two during the run. Julian Green had three kills in the span of four points as SMWC pulled ahead 24-17. Jacob Wisniewski finished off the set with a service ace.
Rio Grande bounced back in the fourth, taking a 20-13 lead on a kill by Tyler Miller-Bross. The Pomeroys rallied to within 21-18 on a pair of kills by Mark Zmojdzin, two by Julian Green and an ace by Zon Mendiola.
Rio Grande was able to finish off the set 25-21 on an SMWC attack error.
In the fourth, the Pomeroys looked poised to send it to a fifth set. Christian Green put a kill down for a 12-7 lead. Jonathan Teo, who had a solid match with five kills and four blocks, put a kill down for a 16-8 lead.
Rio Grande ounted a rally, pulling with 23-20 on a kill by Tyler Miller-Bross. Martinez put down one of his seven kills for a 24-22 lead for SMWC, but Rio Grande ran off four straight points to clinch the match.
Mark Zmojdzin chipped in 11 kills. Zon Mendiola had a team-high 17 digs. Connor Orrock had 28 assists.
