Early Goals Not Enough as SMWC Falls at Anderson

ANDERSON, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College built an early two-goal advantage behind Riley Sabath and Lauren Gill, but Anderson University rallied to hand the Pomeroys a 4-2 setback Wednesday evening at Fridley Field.

Sabath put SMWC (2-8) in front just 6:25 into the match, scoring her third goal of the season on the Pomeroys' first shot on target.

Goalkeeper Cileen Saif helped preserve the advantage with three saves over the next two minutes, turning away attempts from Jess Rogozinski and Kennedy Hurst after stopping an earlier shot by Maeve Hanley.

Gill doubled the Pomeroys' lead in the 28th minute. The junior found the back of the net at the 27:05 mark for her team-leading seventh goal of the season, giving SMWC a 2-0 advantage.

Anderson (4-3-1) began its comeback less than three minutes later. Natalie Marcum scored off an assist from Hurst in the 30th minute before Mailee Cornette pulled the Ravens level at 2-2 with 4:38 remaining in the opening half. Marcum and Claire Neiger assisted on the equalizer.

Saif finished the opening 45 minutes with five saves as the teams entered halftime tied.

Addison Emberton took over in goal for SMWC to begin the second half and made two saves during the opening three minutes. She stopped an initial attempt from Kassidy Jeffers in the 52nd minute, but Jeffers converted moments later to give Anderson its first lead of the evening.

Emberton helped keep the Pomeroys within striking distance by making five more saves over the next four minutes. She finished with eight saves in the second half, giving SMWC's goalkeeper tandem 13 for the match.

Sabath generated the Pomeroys' final scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute, sending an attempt over the crossbar. Anderson added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Hurst scored off an assist from Jersey Scyoc to establish the final margin.

Sabath led SMWC with two shots and one goal, while Gill scored on her lone attempt. Mira Atari and Lauren Tilley also recorded shots for the Pomeroys.

SMWC will open River States Conference play Saturday when it travels to Richmond, Indiana, to face IU East. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT.
