Flick’s Brace Lifts Pomeroys Past Crosstown Rival Rose-Hulman, 2-1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Mats Flick scored twice in the opening 30 minutes Tuesday night to propel the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's soccer team to a 2-1 road victory over crosstown rival Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Flick put the Pomeroys (3-5-2) in front just 7:06 into the match, finishing an attacking sequence created by Jacobo Galvez and Franco Mauri.

Rose-Hulman answered less than two minutes later. SMWC goalkeeper Harry Jackson stopped Eli Miller's initial attempt, but Benjamin Murphy converted the ensuing opportunity to level the match at 1-1 in the ninth minute.

Jackson made two more saves during a stretch of early pressure from the Fightin' Engineers, turning away Joshua Echegoyen in the 11th minute and denying Murphy in the 13th.

SMWC reclaimed the lead for good in the 30th minute. Flick struck again for his second goal of the night, completing his brace and giving the Pomeroys a 2-1 advantage they carried into halftime.

The Pomeroys continued to create opportunities after the break. Flick placed another attempt on frame in the 68th minute, but Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Alex Kerestan made the save. Nikolas Kellner added a pair of shots, while Ethan Johnson and Marc Valderrama also generated second-half chances.

Rose-Hulman nearly found an equalizer in the 71st minute when Rylan Chau struck the right post. The SMWC back line held firm from there, preventing the Fightin' Engineers from placing a shot on goal during the entire second half.

Flick accounted for all three of SMWC's shots on goal and finished with four points. Jackson made three saves to earn the victory, while Galvez and Mauri each collected an assist.

The Pomeroys finished with eight shots, while Rose-Hulman recorded nine. SMWC limited the hosts to four shots on goal.

SMWC will open River States Conference play Saturday against Indiana University East. The match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Eaton High School in Eaton, Ohio.
