MARION, Ind. — Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College football ran into one of the NAIA's top teams Saturday evening as No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan defeated the Pomeroys 68-0 at Wildcat Stadium.
Indiana Wesleyan built a 21-0 advantage in the opening quarter and carried a 41-0 lead into halftime. The Wildcats finished with 601 yards of total offense, including 404 on the ground, while holding SMWC to 126 total yards. The Pomeroys recorded 15 first downs and converted three of four fourth-down attempts.
SMWC's defense did create a second-half turnover when
Jaden Wakefield forced an Indiana Wesleyan fumble near the goal line and
Vincent Dates recovered it at the Pomeroys' 1-yard line.
Kylif Miller provided a spark on special teams, totaling 102 yards on six kickoff returns, including a 31-yard return.
Holtman Doades averaged 36.8 yards on four punts.
The Pomeroys will now turn their attention to a historic day for the program.
SMWC will play its
first-ever football game at McMahon Field on Saturday, Sept. 26, when the Pomeroys host the University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Kickoff is scheduled for
1 p.m. ET at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.
