ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College men's volleyball team earned a four-set victory over Greenville (Ill.), 25-22, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, Wednesday afternoon inside Knoerle Center.
With the win, the Pomeroys improved to 14-1 overall, while Greenville fell to 2-6.
SMWC hit an efficient .302 as a team with 55 kills and 52 assists, compared to Greenville's .153 hitting percentage and 44 kills. The Pomeroys were particularly sharp in the second and fourth sets, posting hitting percentages of .400 and .444, respectively.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods took control early, claiming the first two sets by identical 25-22 scores. In set two, the Pomeroys committed just three errors on 30 swings while recording 15 kills to build a 2-0 advantage.
Greenville responded in the third set, edging SMWC 26-24 to extend the match. The Panthers capitalized on key swings late in the set to force a fourth frame.
The Pomeroys regrouped quickly, dominating the fourth set with 15 kills and only three errors on 27 attempts for a .444 hitting clip. SMWC pulled away late to secure the 25-18 victory and close out the match.
Joseph Szadorski led the Pomeroys with 13 kills and added three blocks.
Christian Green finished with 11 kills, while
Yammiel Martinez contributed nine kills and a team-high five blocks at the net.
Ethan Martins paced the offense with 20 assists.
Jacob Wisniewski and
Ethan Ricketts each tallied 13 assists in a balanced distribution effort. Defensively,
Daniel Musa recorded nine digs, and
Trevin Matsuba added eight.
Greenville was led by Sam Molitor with 12 kills and three blocks, while Tyrone Ealy added 10 kills. John Heater V dished out 20 assists and Jay Ramirez recorded a match-high 12 digs for the Panthers.
