SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. – Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball reached another milestone Saturday afternoon, collecting its 20th victory of the season with a five-set win over visiting IU-Southeast. The Pomeroys held on 25-23, 17-25, 25-15, 22-25, 15-13 inside the Knoerle Center in River States Conference play.
SMWC (20-2, 4-1 RSC) rode a career-best performance from senior outside hitter
Karla Melendez, who poured in 24 kills on a .364 hitting percentage while adding 15 digs and a team-high 26.5 points. She delivered three kills in the decisive fifth set, helping the Pomeroys finish with an .360 efficiency in the final frame.
Setter
Aden Britt turned in a double-double with 43 assists and 17 digs while adding three kills and two service aces.
Masa Pesic contributed nine kills and 10.5 points, while middle blocker
Felicia Omosebi anchored the net with six blocks and five kills. Defensively,
Leishmarie Virella tallied 13 digs to back the Pomeroy backcourt.
As a team, SMWC hit .200 with 56 kills and matched the Grenadiers with 55 assists. The Pomeroys also held a decisive edge in blocks (11-7).
IU-Southeast (10-3, 3-2 RSC) pushed the match to five behind standout efforts from Ella Brooks (18 kills, 11 digs), Nicole Stratford (15 kills), and setter Carly Mason (42 assists, 15 digs).
SMWC pulled ahead late in the fifth set after back-to-back points from Melendez and Omosebi at the net, clinching the match 15-13.
The victory marks SMWC's 20th win of the season, continuing one of the best starts in program history.
The Pomeroys return to action on Friday, October 3 at 6 p.m. (ET) when they host IU-East inside the Knoerle Center for the program's annual Pink Out game.
