MIDWAY, Ky. – The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's soccer team dropped its River States Conference opener Thursday evening, falling 3-0 to Midway University at Midway Turf Field.
The Pomeroys (0-7-1, 0-1 RSC) held the Eagles to a single first-half goal, but Midway (3-1-1, 1-0 RSC) added two more in the final 17 minutes to secure the victory.
Laykin Irvin opened the scoring in the 13th minute with her first goal of the season. Nadia Meeks doubled the advantage in the 74th minute off an assist from Anna Grace Meek, and Kylie Hudgins capped the scoring in the 81st minute with her second tally of the year.
SMWC was outshot 14-4, but sophomore
Raelee Everhart provided a spark off the bench with three shots, including two on target. Goalkeeper
Eerika Erjansalo recorded four saves while playing all 90 minutes in net for the Pomeroys.
The Eagles finished with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks and placed seven of their 14 attempts on goal. Midway goalkeeper Lilly Riordan stopped two shots to collect the clean sheet.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods continues its RSC slate on Saturday, Sept. 27, with a 1 p.m. (CT) road matchup against Oakland City University at the Goebel Soccer Complex in Evansville, Ind.
