OWENSBORO, Ky. — The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College women's volleyball team continued its historic start to the season Thursday night, defeating Brescia University 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-20) to set a new program record with 17 consecutive victories.
The Pomeroys improved to 17-1 overall and 2-0 in league play with the win. The streak surpasses the previous program-best 16 straight victories.
Grace Geisler paced the offense with 11 kills and four aces, while hitting .308 for the match. Masa Pešic added seven kills on a .385 clip, and
Evelyn Morales was nearly flawless with five kills on seven swings (.714). Setter
Aden Britt directed the attack with 20 assists and chipped in two kills of her own.
Defensively,
Selena Sosa and
Leishmarie Virella each collected 11 digs to anchor the back row. The Pomeroys held Brescia (5-7, 0-1 RSC) to just a .050 hitting percentage, out-digging the Bearcats 55-37. SMWC also led in kills (43-22), aces (8-2), and blocks (4-2).
With the sweep, SMWC remained perfect in conference play and kept its record-setting streak alive heading into a marquee home showdown. The Pomeroys return to action Wednesday, Sept. 17, when they host No. 18 IU-Kokomo at 7 p.m. inside Knoerle Center.
